Curriculum 3 Months, 1 Week ago
As Salaamu Alaikum,

I am looking for a good secular curriculum to use that is geared towards homeschooling. I would appreciate it if we could start a discussion about some of the curriculum's that we might have tried. Jazakallahu khayr for any help and I look forward to reading your posts.

As salamu alaikum wa ramatullah,

This is the first time I have taken a look at the forums masha'Allah. i suppose i will try and post n intro at some point insha'Allah. you were asking about curriculums. are you looking for something prepackaged or parts? are you only interested in something secular or would you be willing to look at something christian? what grades do you want to know about or are you looking for general information on all grades?

wa salamu alaikum,
Umm Mukhtaar Mina

As Salaamu alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu,

Jazakillahu khayr for your reply. I am looking for anything that can help me and make homeschooling a little easier. I have been piecing my curriculum together, which requires a lot of time. I am currently homeschooling five of my children, masha Allah, their grades are pre-k, 1st, 3rd, 5th-6th, and 6th-7th. Any information that you can provide would be helpful.

wa alaikumus salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatu,

fo secular curriculum in box the best that i have seen is Calvert.
Pros:
*it comes with a lesson manual and the answers to everything except the green tests
*the day's lessons are completely laid out
*it is scripted o mild degree, tells you what to introduce what to say how to say it
*you have teacher support even if you do not go with the AtS service
*no planning on your part except in places where you may need to preplan somethin such as phonics sliders in K, mystery substance in 3 and 4, certain experiments in 6 things like that
*it comes with a list of al the needed science materials and they can be found rather easilyi think at walmart or something like that
*all you supplies are in the box including erasers and pencils, paper clips, flash cards writig paper, notebooks ect

Cons:
*expensive
*cannot be totally reused for the second child per your agreement with calvert
*has somethings we would totally throw out such as mythology in 3rd grade
www.calvertschool.org

Sonlight is totally christian but i really enjoyed their science for yrs 3 and 5. it was very hands on and used real books. also it was more like research based than just basal reading. the science was not overtly hristian except for the reading of certain books which coud be eliminated without causing any problem with the structure of the curriculm except for maybe in yr 3 the intro to biology book. i just used a black marker and eliminated the bible verses. this was about 5 yrs ago though. in yr 5 the book ongrowing up/puberty was a little christian-y and also has some pictures you'll want to eliminate. overall i thought it was a good purchase. i did not buy it from sonlight though

Konos is also from a christian perspective but again you can easiy eliminate the bible and substitute it for qur'an. konos is more unit study oriented and gives you a list of things you can do for the topic being studied. i did not use this but i did get a look at it. (in terms of unit study of you want to see how that is set up i can send you one i semi put together insha'Allah)

all of these companies have samples on their sites. i can email or post the addresses to konos and sonlight insha'Allah if you like.

Wa salamu alaikum wa rahmatullah
