Q: What is the meaning of Al Idghaam in the (Arabic) Language and jargon (of the science of Tajweed)?

A: As far as the linguistic meaning it means to enter one thing into another.  In the jargon of the science of Tajweed, it is the meeting of an unvowelled letter with one that has vowelling which results in them becoming one letter with a Shaddah which articulated in one movement of the tongue.

Q: What are the letters of Al Idghaam and how many are they?

A: Al Idghaam has six letters which combined in the statement,

يَرْمَلُون

Q: How many categories do these letters have?

A: They breakdown into two categories:

1-Al Idghaam with Gunnah, in this case the merger is deficient and incomplete (the following are its letters).

ي و م ن

2-Al Idghaam without Gunnah, in this case the merger is complete (the following are its letters).

ل ر

Q: What are some examples of this stated in the order that was mentioned?

A: The example of Noon  As Saakinah with Yaa is:

وَ إِن يَقُولُوا

The Noon As Saakinah is entered into the Yaa.

An example of Tanween with Yaa is:

لِقَومٍ يُؤْمِنُونَ

The Tanween is entered into the Yaa but under the condition that the letter that merges is only merged with a letter that is in a separate word as in the previous examples.  If they are both in one word then the Noon As Saakinah must be fully articulated as in the words,

الدّنْيَا, قَنْوَانٌ, صِنْوانٌ, بُنْيانٌ

An example of Noon As Saakinah with Meem is:

مِّن مَّلْجَإٍ

An example of Tanween with Meem is:

هُدًى مِّن رَّبِهِم

An example of Noon As Saakinah with Waw is:

مِن وَرَآئِهِم

An example of Tanween with Waw is:

هُدًي وَرَحْمَةٌ

An example of Noon As Saakinah with Noon is:

إِن نذََّقُولُ

An example of Tanween with Noon is:

حِطَّةٌ نَّغْفِرْ

These are the examples for Al Idgraam with Ghunnah.

The examples of Idghaam without Gunnah which takes place when the Noon As Saakinah or Tanween is merged with the Laam and Raa are as follows:

An example of Noon As Saakinah with Laam is:

يُبَيِّن لَّنَا

An example of Tanween with Laam is:

هُدًي لِلْمُتَّقِينَ

An example of Noon As Saakinah with Raa is:

مِّن رَّبِّهِم

An example of Tanween with Raa is:

غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ

Use these examples as a model and do the same in similar cases.
