My Experience and Advice on Homeschooling

When I decided to home school my child, I had to give it some serious thought. So many questions arose about this topic for me.  I had to weigh it on a scale of pros and cons.  I decided that it would be worth it to try to teach my child at home.  I was extremely worried if I could do it, and could he learn from me.  I knew everyone wasn’t teacher material. I thought that, since I was his first teacher from birth, maybe, it would be possible to continue only in a different direction.  After all I’m helping with homework from public school.

Well, little did I know that there were so many steps to this challenge.  I had to start networking with others that did home schooling or knew where I could get started. After, carefully choosing the right program, I began to learn a lot myself.  Sometimes, I had to study hard on how to make Him understand some subjects.  I got a little confused myself at times. I even had tear jerking days.  There were days that I found myself questioning my decision whether or not I made the right choice.     Nevertheless, I continued and gave it all I had.  It took a lot of hard work and consistency. In the end my child graduated and has his High School Diploma.  He entered a community college and did job training at the same time for a while, moved out on his own and became top management in a retail fortune 500 company.  He was at a tender age of 19 years old.  Now, he wants to enter the medical field.  Home schooling was rewarding for me and him.

My advice for those who are considering to homeschool

1. Make sure you think it out carefully.

2. Network with others that homeschool.

3. Search for the right programs that are completed, some programs are skeletons, they don’t give you all the work assignments or a lot of important things you would need to complete the school year.  So, check things out before you order from homeschooling companies.

4. The next thing that I found important is make sure that you really have the time for home schooling your child.  Stick to a schedule for each subject.  Don’t let the child think he can do the work whenever he feels like it.  Start early in the morning after breakfast, that’s when the brain is fresh.  Let the child take you serious as his teacher.  You must study the assignment yourself before you give it to them.  Make sure you understand it first.  Or they will lose confidence in you as their teacher.  If you can make sure you can get books that will help you. I had three different math books and a number of grammar books to help me.   It’s very good to invest in books that will help you both, whenever you run across them.  You must be patient, and reach out for help whenever you get stuck on a subject.  Call those who may be able to help you.

5. Next thing is don’t give up, and never let your child see you sweat.  Again, before you start.  Make sure this is what you really want to do, or this is what you really have to do?

Thank you,
