As parents/teachers we want our children to be alert and engaged during school to ensure that they are learning. A method to keep our children enthused about learning is to use a subject that they are wild about and make it the theme of learning. One way to achieve this is by putting together a unit study.
A unit study is achieved by integrating several subjects and skill areas while focusing on a central theme.By way of a unit study, this allows the child freedom in deciding on what they will learn to some extent. Through a unity study, you will be able to teach through a topic that interests the child. You can teach through Islamic literature or just literature, science and geography. In addition, a unit study can be adapted to the child/children levels or grades.
The way to build a unit study first starts with picking the topic. For example the topic is plants (science).
You can formulate a vocabulary and spelling list that deals with plants. Take advantage of all available resources that may be at your disposal like the library, Internet, farms and even family members. Use your local library to find books that you can use for comprehension . Have the child write short stories, poems and reports.
Find a farm, local famer markets or nursery, which you can purchase plants for science experiments and a field trip all in one. With the plants from the field trip you can show the children how light is needed for plants to grow so you will cover one plant and have the child write their observations like every other day in a science journal. You can have the child research what bugs are helpful for plants and which are harmful. You can add depth by going over the anatomy of a bug. The unit study can be as structured or unstructured as you like.
The jist of a unity study is freedom for you and your family to study things you enjoy and love learning about and integrating the skills needed for your child/children's education.
