Book Review: Home Learning Year by Year |
|
|
I found this book to be a must have in my library.I would recommend all home educators to read this book. The book is well written and very informative. While in the process of preparing my own curriculum for the school year I often refer back to Home Learning Year by Year. Most parents who decide to homeschool are not formal educators and have no previous background in curriculum development. This book actually gives you an outline of what your child should be learning, thus providing the many needed answers. Included in the book is five appendixes they range from; technology, textbooks and resources, lesson plans, book lists, and distance learning. These appendixes are useful for the beginning homeschooler.
The following is taken from the back of the book; “What Should I Teach When? Finally, homeschoolers have a comprehensive guide to designing a homeschool curriculum, from one of the country’s foremost homeschooling experts. In Home Learning Year by Year, Rebecca Rupp presents a structured plan to ensure that your children will learn what they need to know it, from preschool through high school. Based on the traditional pre-K through 12th grade structure, Home Learning Year by Year features:
- The integral subjects to be covered within each grade.
- Standards for knowledge that should be acquired by your child at each level.
- Recommended books to use as texts for every subject.
- Guidelines for the importance of each topic: which knowledge is essential and which is best for more expansive study based on your child’s personal interests.
- Suggestions for how to sensitively approach less academic subjects, such as sex education and physical fitness.”
